You heard it right. Not Adam & Eve. or Mary & Martha

A quick Faith 101

When You believe, God calls the “believe” faith. You cannot conjure faith. Faith comes from hearing and hearing the word of God. When you believe what you have heard, God calls it faith.

Abraham Justified By Faith Then Works

When Abraham believed God, his faith was credited as righteousness (Romans 4:20-22).

Because Abraham believed (faith), It resulted to obedience (fruit) thus offer his son Isaac as God commanded him.

Faith first then Works – FAITH IS THE TREE, WORKS IS THE FRUIT

Are you willing to offer your son or daughter? why so? because of obedience? or faith?

Do you obey God to love Him? or because you were loved by Him?

Adam Is Stressed, Eve Is To Blame

God asked Adam “Did you eat from the tree I commanded you not to eat?” Adam’s reply was this

Genesis 3:12 (NKJV)

12 “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”

Ouch. He blamed God and the Eve. Is Adam stressed?

Adam was justifying (works) his actions. He is in essence saying “It’s not my fault”

Move back a few verses. Notice what they did after eating the forbidden fruit

Genesis 3:7 (NKJV)

7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

They sewed fig leaves and covered themselves with it. *fig leaves – is a type of Self Righteousness

Adam’s self righteousness was manifesting.

Self righteousness causes a person to blame others. Either he points to the person close to him or he points to God and blaming God ultimately.

Self righteousness – Is when we perform work to cover our sins. And not believing in the blood of Jesus

Self righteousness – Is when we justify ourselves by works and not by believing we are justified by faith

The line below is quite famous from the famous parable “Father who lost his two sons”

“Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!” – Luke 15:11-32

Notice the angry son saying “I’ve been slaving for you … but when this son of yours” – sounds like stressed? and what was he performing(work) to earn for the things that is already his (Luke 15:31)?

A self righteous person never believes in Grace. Grace that is receiving freely without any merit. No “self effort  work” involve.

Martha Is Stressed, Mary Is At Rest

While Mary was busy doing nothing (actually Mary was working a different kind) but seated, at rest (work – fruit of faith) and listening to Jesus, Martha was concerned with something else. Lets read

Luke 10:40-42 (NKJV)

40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”

Whoa. “Lord, do You not care that my sister …” sound like Adam in the garden. Is Martha stressed?

Faith is a hand that takes freely. Martha is not taking, rather working (self effort work) for the work (fruit of faith).

She was justifying (works) her actions –“self effort works”. Remember faith comes first, not works.

Look at the disciples reaction during a storm, while Jesus was resting

Mark 4:38-45 (NKJV)

38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”

“Teacher, don’t You care that we are perishing?”. Jesus was resting. It must be an awesome picture to paint. Resting and sound asleep in a storm?

What did Jesus said to his disciples after He gave the storm a piece of peace?

Mark 4:40-45 (NKJV)

40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”

How is it that you have no faith? Why fearful?

Look at what Jesus said to Martha after her complaint

Luke 10:41-42 (NKJV)

41 And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

“Martha, Martha” – Jesus was making sure Martha is hearing (hear) Him

Romans 10:17 (NKJV)

17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God

“So then faith comes by hearing and hearing”, see the emphasis?

“One thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part”

What is that one thing needed? What was Mary doing? Hearing? Yes.

Hearing results to Believing results to Rest (not Worrying – stress free).

Resting is a result of Believing. You are at Rest the opposite of Stress. Mary believed that is why she is sat down at Jesus feet and resting. She is taking from Jesus.

Fear is a result of unbelief.

Stress is a result of “self effort work”

“Self effort work” is a result of Fear

Fear is a result of unbelief.

Martha obviously is not taking from Jesus. She is busy serving/Giving as if Jesus is needing her help.

Martha is Stressed. Mary is at Rest

One Thing Is Needful

JOHN 6:29 (LEB)

29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God: that you believe in the one whom that one sent.”

JOHN 6:40 (LEB)

40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks at the Son and believes in him would have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

The Will, and the Work of God is “BELIEVE”

Summary

1. Work must be the fruit of your faith.

2. Work outside of faith is called “self effort work”

3. Stress is the result of “self effort work”

4. Fear is a result of unbelief. If you are fearful then you need to sit down, rest and listen to Jesus

5. Rest is a result of believing

6. Believing is serving/doing fulfilling the work of God

7. Believing is obeying fulfilling the will of God

8. “Self effort works” is an effort to copy the “work – fruit of faith”

1 Thessalonians 1:3 (TNIV)

3 We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
