The Food Or The Sacrifice?
1 Corinthians 8:4 (CEB)
4 So concerning the actual food involved in these sacrifices to false gods, we know that a false god isn’t anything in this world, and that there is no God except for the one God.
1 Corinthians 10:19-21 (CEB)
19 What am I saying then? That food sacrificed to a false god is anything, or that a false god is anything? 20 No, but this kind of sacrifice is sacrificed to demons and not to God. I don’t want you to be sharing in demons. 21 You can’t drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you can’t participate in the table of the Lord and the table of demons.
What was the issue? Eating food sacrificed to idols? Nope. Paul says you can eat this food. No problem, Provided you do not cause someone to be discourage, whose faith is weak. Jesus says “Eat whatever is set before you”
1 Corinthians 10:27-29 (CEB)
27 If an unbeliever invites you to eat with them and you want to go, eat whatever is served, without asking questions because of your conscience. 28 But if someone says to you, “This meat was sacrificed in a temple,” then don’t eat it for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience. 29 Now when I say “conscience” I don’t mean yours but the other person’s. Why should my freedom be judged by someone else’s conscience?
In fact, when invited by an unbeliever and not eating the food served, means you are acknowledging that there are other gods – which there is really none.
Wait, how about?
“You can’t drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you can’t participate in the table of the Lord and the table of demons” – 1 Corinthians 10:21
Again, Eating the food or drinking is no problem. Participating in the ritual or sacrifice is. Participating in the ritual is an act as if you are one with them.
Food “Sacrificed” – is in past tense. the sacrifice or ritual has happen already
Drink, Participate – is in present tense. the sacrifice or ritual is about to happen
That is why Paul says
“Ran Away from the worship of false gods!” – 1 Corinthians 10:14
Flee, Run Away. Do not participate
Do You Remember Jesus Or Your Sins?
1 Corinthians 11:20-22 (LEB)
20 Therefore, when you come together in the same place, it is not to eat the Lord’s supper. 21 For when you eat it, each one of you goes ahead to take his own supper, and one is hungry and another is drunk. 22 For do you not have houses for eating and drinking? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who do not have anything?
When the believers gathered supposedly to partake the communion, some of them attended with wrong motives. They were hungry, others were drunk then others didn’t care and drink and ate on their own. It was as if they attended an eat all you can buffet party – This manner is not worthy of the Lord’s supper
1 Corinthians 11:23-25 (LEB)
23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night in which he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and after he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 Likewise also the cup, after they had eaten, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
If we partake the communion, We are to remember Jesus.
1 Corinthians 11:27-28(LEB)
27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But let a person examine himself, and in this way let him eat from the bread and let him drink from the cup.
Unworthy manner is sin? Think hard. Examine himself is confess ones sins? Think harder
Does this verse tells you anything about sin? Does it tell you anything about confession of sins? No!
The unworthy manner is describe in verse 20-22. Go ahead scroll up
The Unworthy Is The Manner Not The Person
In the old times, When an Israelite – who has sin – comes to a priest with a lamb for the sin offering, The Priest does not Examine the person rather the priest examines the offering. The Israelite obviously went as someone with sin. Why examine him? no, examine the lamb if it is without blemish or defects. If the offering is good – perfect, then it’s a go. But as the priest says, so shall it be
Leviticus 27:12 (NKJV)
12 and the priest shall set a value for it, whether it is good or bad; as you, the priest, value it, so it shall be
In 1 Corinthians 11:28, the word Examine is Dokimázō in greek which means
– Does not focus on disproving something (i.e. to show it is bad)
Whoa! Let me repeat that. “DOES NOT FOCUS ON DISPROVING SOMETHING – i.e. to show it is bad”
Jesus is our high priest, and He is our sacrificial lamb that takes away the sins of the world.
Why do we focus on disproving as if the lamb did not take away the sins?
Why show as if the lamb was a bad sacrifice as if it didn’t take away our sins?
Why Do We Focus On Disproving Ourselves
– BY CONFESSING OUR SINS; WHEN GOD HAS ALREADY APPROVED US CLEAN BECAUSE THE BLOOD OF JESUS CLEANSES US OF ALL SINS
– BY REMEMBERING OUR SINS; WHEN GOD HAS ALREADY APPROVED OF OUR FORGIVENESS WHEN WE BECAME BELIEVERS
– BY REMINDING GOD OUR SINS; WHEN GOD HAS ALREADY APPROVED OF REMEMBERING OUR SINS NO MORE
– BY DISQUALIFYING OURSELVES IN PARTAKING; WHEN IT WAS THE BLOOD THAT QUALIFIES US
Do This In Remembrance Of Jesus
Whenever we partake the communion, We remember Jesus. Remember you are righteous. Remember Jesus, who is righteousness Himself, made unto us. Forget the sins. The blood of Jesus washes them away. You are a new creation. You are no longer a sinner. Sinners cannot partake the Lord’s supper!
To show what happens when we take the communion worthily, look at the reversed message below
1 Corinthians 11:29-30 (REVERSED LEB)
29 For the one who eats and drinks, if he recognize the body, eats and drinks no judgment against himself. 30 Because of this, many are strong and healthy among you, and quite many have not died.
In the past when you were sick with infection, the doctor tells you to eat antibiotic 3 times a day for 7 days. Antibiotics taste disgusting, but you eat it anyway and precisely according to prescription. With expectation of getting well soon. And you did get well.
In my home, we have countless experiences of taking communion. At times we take communion everyday. We get healthy and better everyday. For some reason I felt energize. When someone is sick, we take communion. Yes, no medicine. Only bread and wine. It never fails to amazed us How the Lord confound the wise over a piece of bread and wine. A few days, the sick gets well. Without medicine. There is something about in participating in the Lord’s supper.
But You. Yes not me, if You are sick? Go to a doctor, I urge you. Also take your medicine, religiously. Don’t skip.
If you do not have a revelation about communion, Please do not do what we do. This is not a formula or a Law to healing. Ask Jesus to reveal himself to you in the scriptures.
But if you believe Jesus is your healing, wait for the healing to manifest. Do not help God heal you Remember, Jesus is the healer. Not the bread and wine, Not even your faith. Jesus is healing himself
Do this in remembrance of Jesus
Grace and Peace
