Faith and Works [the tree and its fruit]

“ So also faith alone without works is dead ”
– James 2:17

James 2:17 is a description of a Genuine Believer. It describes what a Genuine Believer is, one of the ways to spot them is by their righteous works.

Righteous Works proves The Faith. The Faith proves a Genuine Believer.

Are we now going to do Righteous Works in order to be called Genuine Believers? By all means don’t do it!

“ He who does what is right is Righteous, just as he is Righteous
– 1 John 3:7

Righteous Works are natural to the Righteous. It is!

Why do we teach people to perform Righteous work? Will that make them Righteous?

“ My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water ”
– James 3:12

The True Gospel Must Be Preach

It is useless to teach morality in the churches. Rather, Let us preach the true gospel.

“ For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.  For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to Faith; as it is written, ‘The just shall live by Faith’ ”
– Romans 1:16-17

How can a person produce Righteous Works apart from Faith? Impossible!

How does one acquire Faith?

“  Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ ”
– Romans 10:17

If only Christ is preached in our churches today.  Bring back the Amazing Grace! Bring back Jesus [ who is the amazing Grace himself ] to the churches!

Let us preach good news, the gospel [ means good news ].

Stop telling people “You must love and obey God”. By all means no! Tell them How much God loved them [ unveil Jesus, God’s love personified ] and they will love and obey God because they love Him

“ We loved because God first loved us ”
– 1 John 4:19

Faith Superior to the Law

“ For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law
– Romans 3:28

“ Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law, but by the Faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the Faith of Christ, and not by the works of the Law: for by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified
– Galatians 2:16

The Law cannot justify. The Law cannot save. In fact, Law voids Faith. The works of the Law nullifies Faith. You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law. Christ becomes of no effect to you

The works of Faith perfects the Faith and fulfills the law

“ Well then, if we emphasize Faith, does this mean that we can forget about the Law? Of course not! In fact, only when we have Faith do we truly fulfill the Law
– Romans 3:31

start in Faith and continue in Faith. Don’t end in Work. “from Faith to Faith”

“ For in this gospel is the righteousness of God revealed from Faith to Faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith
– Romans 1:17

The righteous who became righteous by Faith shall live the entire life by Faith and will live because of Faith and will leave the world justified by Faith

Justification by Faith

“ For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law
– Romans 3:28

Justification is by Faith alone. Don’t add works of the Law or Work to it. The justified will perform work, just as the righteous does righteous works. Stop worrying about work. Faith and Work are not mutually exclusive

Faith will cause the bearer to perform works later, hence James 2:17. Faith always comes first, works follows.

Not stand alone work, Not stand alone faith. But Works of Faith. Not your work, but of Faith’s

Is James and Paul in Conflict?

Paul : “No one is justified by the works of the Law
James : “Justified not by faith alone but works

By all means no! The Law was not meant to justify us.

“ For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law ”
– Galatians 3:21

  • Any kind of work or performance or righteous acts or good works that we do to be justified before God is a type of “works of the Law
  • In contrast,
When we try to keep ourselves from committing sin, because we ought to think when we fail, we will lose justification before God – is also a form of “works of the Law
  • Really, anything we perform to be justified before God [ except by Faith ] invalidates Faith. Alienates us from Christ

What then is the Law for?

“ The Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith ”
– Galatians 3:24

How can a sinner be justified, when they deny themselves as sinners? How do they know sin apart from the Law?
or better yet ask how can Gentiles know sin when they don’t have the Law?

“ For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves, in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them ”
– Romans 2:14-15

The Law is built-in to every person. Even the remotest jungle of the tribes, there are forms of law found in them. Indeed there is even a form of god in them of which the tribes man worship.

The role of the Law is to show forth sinfulness. To put one into despair and ultimately point them to Christ

“ Now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor ”
– Galatians 3:25

Christ is not the new Law giver, nor did He came to establish the Law. Christ was revealed unto us, so we may believe in Him, rest our Faith in Him and that our Justification is by Faith in Christ alone.

We are confident that Christ did a “Perfect” and “Finished Work” of which we rest our Faith in Him alone. Amen.

Sola Fide!
