When Abraham pleads for Sodom and Gomorrah he didn’t ask for anything less than 10 righteous people. he stop at 10.

Genesis 18:32 (NIV)

32 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?”

He answered, “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.”

Preachers usually says this
Abraham limited God. Had he went down to 1 person and not stop at 10, Sodom and Gomorrah might have been saved

I Honestly believe Abraham is not dumb. anyone can haggle down to 1? come on. we know every well Lot is righteous and is in Sodom. you don’t need a revelation for that. even unbelievers will reason ‘Abraham should have gone down to 1 righteous person’.

But why didn’t he do that? Abraham knew something about 10.

Lets follow the story on the king of Sodom

Genesis 14:21-24 (NIV)

21 The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods for yourself.”

22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “With raised hand I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High,Creator of heaven and earth, 23 that I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ 24 I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me—to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre. Let them have their share.”

What a statement “I will not accept anything from you so you will say I made Abraham rich”

Less you claim to have made me rich

Why would Abraham make such a bold statement? let us look first what he did when he met king Melchizedek prior to meeting the king of Sodom

Genesis 14:18-20 (NIV)

18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, 19 and he blessed Abram, saying,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
Creator of heaven and earth.
20 And praise be to God Most High,
who delivered your enemies into your hand.”

Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

Here’s a timeline. Abraham gave 10th to Melchizedek then king of Sodom offers wealth then Abraham refused then ‘so that the king of Sodom cannot claim to have made Abraham rich

How did Abraham made rich? read again. you decide how.

Why not give 49-51 or 50-50 or 100%? do you think it has something to do with the amount or quantity? the only thing that matter is 10

Abraham knew he is going to get rich. hence his tone to the king of Sodom ‘..else you say I made Abraham rich’

What does 10 represents?

10 is a number that represents the entire whole.

Therefore if there are 10 righteous person in Sodom and Gomorrah, it is enough to represent the entire Land as righteous before God. even if 90% are wicked
Abraham knew very well the principle behind the 10. remember his encounter with Melchizedek king of Salem

There is 1 righteous person in Sodom. Abraham’s nephew named Lot. but that’s not enough because it takes 10 to represent the entire land.

More on 10

When the Israelites called for war against the tribe of Benjamin, they instructed each of the 11 tribes to pick a 10th of their army

Judges 20:10 (NIV)

10 We’ll take ten men out of every hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred from a thousand, and a thousand from ten thousand, to get provisions for the army.

Know why the first batch of Israelites never entered the promise land?

Numbers 14:6-7 (NIV)

6 Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes 7 and said to the entire Israelite assembly, “The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good.

Its not because only 2 persons believed, Joshua and Caleb. Its not because 10 persons fearful was greater than the 2 who aren’t.

but simply because 10 represented the entire Israelites

What about Moses and the promise?

Moses represents the Law. The Law which is 10.
He was not allowed to enter because he is the Law, so to speak.

The Law cannot mix with Grace. The Law cannot enter the Promised Land

What about Abraham and the Promise?

Abraham believe God and therefore he is justified. Abraham was righteous by faith. did Abraham received the Promise? definitely!

Faith and Grace mixes well together. Isaac was born out of Grace.

Our Promise Land

Today, our promised Land is God’s rest. The way to enter God’s rest is to believe.

Hebrews 3:11-12 (NIV)

11 So I declared on oath in my anger,
‘They shall never enter my rest.’

12 See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.

What is that sin? that prevents us from entering the Promised Land? the sin of unbelief.

Hebrews 3:19 (NIV)

19 So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.

God warns us of unbelief. Unbelief in the finish work of Christ. so when the Law comes demanding righteousness from us, point it to Jesus and say Jesus is my righteousness. when the Law tries to master you, resist because your master is Grace. ‘for sin shall not be your master for you are not under Law but grace’. amen!
