Repentance is not turning away from your sin but turning to the Lamb who takes away your sin

Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world
– John 1:29

how many times have you tried to turn away from sin? have you been successful already? probably not

unbelievers perform their best effort in attempt to be ‘right’ with God. but hopelessly they fail

even Christians today do their best to keep the Law to be ‘justified and righteous’ before God. but only to fail miserably

do you know it is simply easy to be ‘right’ with God? and it is so simple to be righteous and justified before Him?

how?

Believe. just merely believe? Yes! as simple as that. just by believing in Jesus. It was that easy for us because it was extremely difficult and painful for Jesus to endure all the pain at the cross

In the Old Covenant

In the old covenant, forgiveness of sins were based on animal sacrifices.
for example, when offering a lamb, the lamb must be perfect, spotless & unblemished. the priest will examine the lamb brought by the sinner.

after the ritual, the sinner is declared innocent, justified, righteous!  as if without sin!

The perfection, spotlessness, unblemished characteristics of the lamb was transferred to the sinner while the sins of the sinner transferred to the lamb.

an exchange has just happen.

But the blood of animals cannot take away sins. the sins are just covered by the blood. so the ritual has to be repeated year after year

But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year for it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins
– Hebrews 10:3-4

When Jesus died at the cross, shed His blood, JESUS TOOK ALL YOUR SINS! then HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS WAS TRANSFERRED TO YOU. AMEN!!!

the Divine Exchange has happened

That is why

seek first HIS kingdom and his RIGHTEOUSNESS, and all these things will be given to you as well
– Matthew 6:33

Repentance is turning TO Jesus and NOT FROM sin

Repentance is Metanoia in the original Greek means “change of mind”

Jesus and John was telling the Jews to ‘Change your mind. the real Lamb of God is here to take away all your sins!’

hundred of years, the Jews observed the Law. they offered animal sacrifices their entire life. think for one moment what it meant for them to hear someone proclaim “look! the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”

so i say

Repent from “repentance is turning away from sin” !
Repent and turn to Jesus, the Lamb of God who has taken away your sin!

What about preaching repentance?

38 Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit”
– Acts 2:32-38

verse 32-36 tells what Jesus has done then verse 38 is an invitation to turn to Jesus! got it? Repentance is turning TO Jesus

“Therefore if God gave them the same gift as also to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to be able to hinder God?” And when they heard these things, they became silent and praised God, saying, “Then God has granted the repentance leading to life to the Gentiles also!”
– Acts 11:17-18

Notice “when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ” see that? Repentance is turning TO Jesus

The Lord is not delaying the promise, as some consider slowness, but is being patient toward you, because he does not want any to perish, but all to come to repentance.
– 2 Peter 3:9

God wanted everyone to come to repentance. And what is repentance again? turning to Jesus. God is making sure that everyone turns to Jesus. For it is never the desire of God for sinners to perish but all come to salvation. and the only solution to sin is Jesus.

John the Baptist came preaching in the Judean wilderness “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near!”
– Matthew 3:1-2

John was saying ‘Change your mind. the kingdom of God is here!’. Why do you think John did not say ‘turn away from sin’?

And Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people that they should believe in the one who was to come after him—that is, in Jesus.”
– Acts 19:4

why didn’t John say ‘turn away from sin’?

Because he was telling the people to “Turn TO Jesus

“.. the people who sit in darkness
    have seen a great light,
and the ones who sit in the
    land and shadow of death,
a light has dawned on them.”
From that time on, Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven is near”
– Matthew 4:16-17

Jesus was saying “I am the light of the world! I am that Lamb of God whom John spoke about who will take away all your sins. through my death is your everlasting life. change your mind now”

if you have believed Jesus to be the Lamb of God who takes away your sin? then you have just Repented!

Lastly

The main subject of repentance is turning TO Jesus. without Jesus, turning away from sin is useless. so rather than tell people to turn away from sin, proclaim

“Turn to Jesus and He will take care of your sins”

Jesus took your sin and you take on His righteousness. you are righteous because He is your righteousness. you have become the righteousness of God

so next time you ‘miss the mark’, just confess
‘I am the righteousness of God in Christ.
I am righteous by faith in Christ.
I am perfect, without spot, unblemished
      just as Jesus is.

As Jesus is, so am I in this world’ – amen
