Romans 8:1 (NKJV)

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit

take notice “there is THEREFORE now no”

Are you in a struggle?

Therefore to understand “therefore” let us look at the previous condition

Romans 7:15-16 (CEB)

15 I don’t know what I’m doing, because I don’t do what I want to do. Instead, I do the thing that I hate. 16 But if I’m doing the thing that I don’t want to do, I’m agreeing that the Law is right

Paul had a struggle. just like the rest of us. probably we were once

– a drunkard and considered drinking evil
– a chain smoker and considered smoking evil
– a drug addict and considered drugs evil

now imagine what is that evil Paul doesn’t want to do but kept on doing.
was he a drunkard? smoker? law expert? murderer? persecutor?

got my point? evil right?

in Romans 7:19-20 Paul tells of his struggle but in Romans 8 he declares

Romans 8:1 (NKJV)

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

here is my paraphrase

“Therefore, even how much sin-evil I have done or will do, as long as it is called today, I run to Christ for there is no condemnation in Him. I run to Christ by walking in the Spirit”

Walk not after the flesh BUT after the Spirit

Notice in Romans 8:1 “ .. who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit”

IF YOU WALK AFTER THE FLESH, then you will be condemn by the Law, but God does not condemn, the Law will condemn you. don’t believe it? try stealing a pack of cigarette in a 7-11 store. lets see if your conscience does not condemn you. still not convinced? don’t worry, the police is going to arrest you put you to jail. that’s just the civil law of the land. huh, see my point?

by now we should understand one of the reasons why Paul was so adamant with the Galatians when they went back to the Law of Moses

Galatians 1:8-9 (NKJV)

8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed

Paul was emphasizing to the Galatians, “you will be condemn and curse by the Law” why? how? because by default the Law brings wrath and curse to those who breaks it. the thing is this – all man has broken the Law for all have sinned – romans 3:23

none have fulfilled the Law except Jesus. so unless you are in Christ, the Law will condemn and curse you. so ran away to Jesus for there is no curse and condemnation to those who are in Him

Jesus has taken the curse when He was hanged on a tree – galatians 3:13

Doing the things you do not want

Paul gave a stern warning to the Galatians “Christ’s death is in vain if you try to be justified by the Law”. not only that, but Paul knew they will end up “doing the things they do not want to do”

Look

Galatians 5:16-17 (ESV)

16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do

do you see this ? “to keep you from doing the things you want to do”. Paul’s struggle – “The good I want to do, I do not do – romans 7:15”

Paul knew exactly what happens next. he continues further

Galatians 6:1 (NIV)

Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently

see the consequence of going back to the Law? you sin then your sin is recognized by the Law, but not God.

Romans 5:13 (NIV)

13 To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law

Romans 4:8 (ESV)

8 blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin

Reward and Blessing are not the same

Galatians 6:7-8 (NKJV)

7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life

don’t blame God when after you put yourself under the Law and things don’t work for you. You ask “why is my faith as if not effective?”. well, hey – “the Law voids faith – romans 4:14”.
Again, don’t blame God for you are simply reaping what you have sowed in the flesh

but when you walk in the Spirit, you submit to God’s law

Romans 8:7 (NKJV)

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be

Romans 8:5 (NKJV)

5 .. but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit

Going back to the Law for Justification is walking in the flesh

Therefore sow in the Spirit

Galatians 6:8 (NKJV)

8 .. but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life

again

Galatians 5:16-17 (ESV)

16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 .. the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do

Romans 8:8 (NKJV)

8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God

The end of Paul’s struggle

Romans 6:14 (NKJV)

14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace

Galatians 5:18 (NKJV)

18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law

What’s the reason for Paul’s struggle? answer here : ______________

more interestingly, you want to know how Paul dealt with the struggle?

Romans 8:3-4 (NIV)

3 .. God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit

it is the knowledge that Christ is your sin offering and that our sin has been condemn in Jesus. That is how we deal with the struggle.

Therefore, God cannot condemn you ever again for He is righteous and just – not punishing your sin twice

Last words

Walk in the Spirit. Walk in Faith. Walk in Grace.

The flesh is going to exist until the day we leave this world. and I am not talking about the flesh being the physical body.

now, the struggle is no longer about the devil for the devil is DEFEATED already. but the real struggle today in you is between the flesh and the Spirit

You are a new creation, old things have pass away.
true transformation is effortless for it is by the Spirit, through Jesus.

How do we end the struggle? is there a formula, method? what must I do?

Romans 7:24 (NKJV)

24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?

my friend, it is not a method nor a formula nor our effort, that will save us! Paul says “Who will deliver me?”. Paul knew a Person is needed to deliver him.

We need to realize that Jesus is Yeshua (means to deliver). Jesus is Salvation Himself – 1 Corinthians 1:30

So the next time we feel condemn? let us not be. feelings can be deceiving. whether we feel forgiven or not, is irrelevant for we are forgiven eternally by the eternal blood of Jesus. we are indeed forgiven and saved!

Therefore, now look away from self and look unto Jesus! who is our deliverer! the One whom ‘yesterday, has delivered us’, the One whom ‘today is delivering us’ and the One whom ‘tomorrow will deliver us’. our savior, Jesus. amen.
